CASE STUDY 1

 VICTIMS OF TECHNOLOGY

QUESTION 1:

What is the impact to the world in terms of social economic value as the result of the retirement of Western Union telegrams?

Social Value is the principle and standards of human interaction within a given group that are regarded by members of that group as being worthy, important or significant. This social value can influence by communication technology which is new business with new innovations regularly eclipse old business based on old technologies. A business must continuously evaluate its mission and practices in light of current day trends.

Before the retirement of western union telegram, people used telegrams to send cross country messages in less than a day. Earlier, messages were sent via pony express. In the early days of electronic communication, western union telegrams were an important part of person to person communication around the world. Telegrams reached their peak in year ago when it was cheaper to send a telegram than it was to make a long distance phone call. Telegram became much more amusing with the invention of the singing telegram in 1993. Early in 2006, telegram is the last delivered as western union discontinued its telegram service. The invention of the telephone and fax machine reduced the need for telegrams. Today, western union’s core business is in helping consumers and business transfer money and make payments.

After the retirement of western union telegram, people used new technologies can cause businesses to redefine themselves. Today, they used different methods to send messages in less than a day, for example fax, e-mail and mobile phone. These businesses implemented sustaining change by changing their organizations to move with new trends. Sometimes these methods will refuse to change. The consequences lose out to others that embrace new technologies, as though technology itself has callously plowed them under. It is important to consider the changes brought about by new technologies and gauge their value in terms of quality of life. While western union telegram not longer been used and new technology like fax, e-mail and mobile phone will be called as Smartphone.

Summary about two different methods, western union telegram is famous method to sent messages but this method not longer used because from year to year this method will leave behind and new technology will produce for example fax, e-mail and mobile phone. Nowadays people used Smartphone method to sent messages to others country and it take less than a day. You can make text messages at home or everywhere. Overall, using Smartphone is very easy to sent messages to everyone.

QUESTION 2:

How have online retailers such as Amazon.com affected change in traditional brick-and-mortar business such as Sears?

An Online Retailer is a person who sells products cars vacuum cleaners cosmetics whatever by using an online website as your store. People view your products on the computer or cell phone and order them using a credit card or Pay Pal they are then drop shipped to the customer by UPS or FED X. Traditional brick and mortar business is a traditional "street-side" business that deals with its customers face to face in an office or store that the business owns or rents. The local grocery store and the corner bank are examples of "brick and mortar" companies. Brick and mortar businesses can find it difficult to compete with web-based businesses because the latter usually have lower operating costs and greater flexibility.

Example for online retailer is the amazon.com. Amazon.com is an online retailer, with Headquarters in Seattle, they have hubs throughout the United States to make shipping faster. Amazon.com started as an online bookstore, but soon diversified, selling DVDs, CDs, MP3 downloads, computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, and toys. Amazon has established separate websites in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and China. The company was renamed after the Amazon River, one of the largest rivers in the world, which in turn was named after Amazons, the legendary nation of female warriors in Greek mythology.
Example for traditional brick and mortar is Sears. Sears, officially named Sears Roebuck and Co., is an American chain of department stores, which was founded by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck in the late 19th century. Formerly a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Sears merged with Kmart in early 2005, creating the Sears Holdings Corporation. From its mail order beginnings, the company grew to become the largest retailer in the United States by the mid-20th century, and its catalogs became famous. Competition and changes in the demographics of its customer base hurt Sears following World War II, as the country's suburban areas thrived, hurting the company's inner-city strongholds. Eventually, Sears' catalogs were discontinued in lieu of more web-based alternatives. Some example of sears are sears department store, sears hardware store, sears grand, sears optical, sears essential, sears hometown stores.
In conclusion, online retailer such as Amazon is much more better and easy to use with its cognitive helping tools to assist the shopper. If we go to Sears’ website, we will find a simple interface which is good and a sense that not much is happening there, which is bad. The navigation is linear, we have to click through a tree-like structure to get our item or use the search function. The problem with this web site is not only that is not very helpful, but is not working well either which points to a serious problem of the overall design of the information architecture.

QUESTION 3:

Problem solving:

It is often difficult for old, established industries to change business practices. How can this be observed in the impact of the digital music boom (MP3 file sharing) on record companies and their traditional methods of music distribution?
What is digital music? Digital music is the type of music made using the digital hardware and software of computer where the recorded original analog sound are converted to digital sound and then stored in a CD audio disc. The qualities of the digitized sound are affected by two factors, which is the sample rate and sample size. Therefore, with higher sample taken per second and more bits used per sample, the better and closer the digital copy sound is to the original analog sound.

In this modern era which is also known as digital age, digital sound of music has replaced analog sound. This is because of its constant high quality sound and portability where the quality of the sound recorded will stay exactly the same even after many times of replayed and it can be transfer or moved between storage devices. With this portable function of digital music, it can be distributed faster and efficient through the internet where people can just buy online and download it to store in their own storage device and play. The reasons that it maintains its high quality sound is because the music stored in the optical disc storage device is read and written by laser where there is no involvement of physical contact which could scratch the disc.

Whereas, the music recording in an analog form, stored in cassettes and vinyl records have to be replaced by a new copy of records after long time of usage. Due to the involvement of a physical contact between the player and recording, it causes the quality of the sound to get degraded each time it is played. This analog form of music are not portable as well, it cannot be transferred or moved between storage devices like the digital music do. And so this analog form of music has to be distributed by placing it in CD shop to be for sale, which is a very slow progress.

However it be digital or analog methods of music distribution, both methods have its own benefits and drawbacks. A scenario that can be made for this to illustrate the difference between the two methods is of a famous artist take Michael Jackson for instance. As he was declared dead, his songs flew off the charts. A pop king and a music mogul he is people were mourning about his dead. As a remembrance, his fans that are more into the new technology will download his songs from I Tunes maybe whereas some might prefer to buy his limited edition of cassettes, tapes, CD or vinyl.

The advantages of downloading the tracks via I Tunes it is much cheaper, more convenient and faster. The disadvantage of this however, the tracks might be defective and made of poor quality. For the fans who prefer to buy his track, the advantage would be self-satisfaction, having a limited edition of Michael Jackson that can be kept for a long time. The drawbacks of this, probably the buyer might have to pay more as, or do bidding due to the high demand and competition between the other fans who wanted to have the limited edition tracks of Michael Jackson.

As a conclusion, it is up to the individual preference to make the choices which method they like the most. However there is an urgent need for the industries that still practice the traditional methods, to adapt to the modern ways of distributing their music in order to compete with the modern technology. Other alternative is to come up with creative ideas that are innovative but still keeping the traditional values to keep the interest of the valued customer to in traditional concepts of music distribution. If the industries still insists on traditional methods of music distribution, they will be unable to compete in the fast growing market and would die out sooner or later.

QUESTION 4:

Consider the uses of technology at your school. How are educational institutions taking advantage of technology to compete with each other and attain students?

Technological advances are rapidly changing the way in which educational institutes operate from campus to classroom. To be up-to-date with the modern world, educational institutes realize that they must make the most of technology, especially when providing an education becomes a business whether it be advertising the institute, deciding when and where the class should be, or the modern technology that today’s classrooms are equipped with, the evidence shows that modern educational institutes are making the most of modern technology to entice students. Nowadays, each modern educational institute has a website, and links to the websites via other associated websites.

These websites not only appeal to prospective students, but are also used as a platform to advertise for teachers. Most schools are equipped with personal rooms and it is common for there to be a personal in the class for the use of the teacher. Overhead projectors (OHPs) are also used to display images from the personal onto a massive white screen. This feature is particularly useful for instructors who wish to use software such as PowerPoint when presenting their lesson. Wireless microphones are also used in the classroom to wage perceptibility in massive classrooms whilst at the same time allowing unrestricted movement around the classroom whilst at the same time allowing unrestricted movement around the classroom. As technology advances, so do educational institutes, be it in how they advertise, where they wage an education, or the use of equipment in the classroom.

A student looking to attend university has no further to go than online in his search. Once there, he will find a multitude of options, including online Master’s degree programs from universities on different continents. Modern technologies are just tools, however powerful, pervasive, or necessary they may be for modern commerce. The technology, if thoughtfully employed, can serve as intervention implements and motivational objects on behalf of social, economic, and political change.

Once they consider what the technology allows them to do differently, it can inspire them to re-think an activity or enterprise, whether social, economic, or educational. From the perspective of profit-making and nonprofit entities, modern technologies—beyond being a useful tool for change—can also be disruptive, changing the ways people work, interact, and more. Community capacity-building efforts in Southside seem to have passed the point of having participants dismiss unfamiliar technologies, ideas, and practices out of hand, and re-thinking of activities is occurring in selective places but much work remains. As a community’s that ease in using technology increases, broader and deeper conversations about technology’s influences on life are in order.

Computer software changes how architects think about buildings, surgeons about bodies, and CEOs about business. Besides that, it also changes how teachers think about teaching and how their students think about learning the technology was important. And it is important to the students to understand at a deep level the personal effects of technology in order to make it serve people and their communities well. Much of the community leadership development in Southside aims to bring such an awareness of choices and consequences in using new technologies.
